250 Years of British Antique Wine Bottles Parts 1 and 2 Sealed wine bottles, the wine drinking classes and other associated bottles 1665-1915
By Fay Banks
Several books have attempted to catalogue antique sealed wine bottles. In contrast this book describes and illustrates a small selection of sealed wine bottles. Additionally it provides an in-depth look at some of the bottles owners, their occupations, their residences and the historical context of their lives.
The owners of sealed wine bottles were spread widely through society; merchants, institutions, lawyers, bankers, doctors, military men, clergymen, the landed gentry and members of the aristocracy all owned sealed wine bottles.
During the period when these bottles were used Britain was engaged in a number of wars including the American War of Independence and the Napoleonic Wars. These wars affected trade, improving the fortunes of some and destroying those of others.
The book is published in two parts. Part 1 concentrates on merchants and trade and covers taverns, and inns; wine merchants; brewing and cider making; textiles; banking; maritime matters; tanning; apothecaries and druggists and drugs. Part 2 concentrates on the clergy, the landed gentry and the aristocracy.
In Part 1 there are descriptions of many individuals including James Oakes of Bury St Edmunds, William Leman of Chard, James Etty of Oxford, Thomas Ansell of Wantage, William Clapcott of Blandford Forum, Nicholas Pearse of London, James Gammell of Greenock, Edmund Herbert of Whittlebury and Gray's Inn, the Holdsworth and Newman families of Dartmouth and the Davy family of Topsham. In total, information is provided on more then eighty sealed bottles and other interesting unsealed bottles. The book is illustrated in full colour with over 100 figures. Part 2 is of a similar size. Some of the key individuals are the Earls of Powis, Braddon of Bridgerule, the Carews of Haccombe, Assheton of Downham, Herring of Sillaton, Edgcumbe of Mount Edgcumbe, Ludford of Ansley, Rolle of Bicton, Strickland of Boynton, Earl Poulett, Tredcroft of Warnham Court, and many others.
